New Rules for International Students in the UK: 2025 Updates

From 1 January 2024, new UK Student visa rules have been introduced that bring significant changes for international students and their families. These updates aim to tighten immigration controls while still offering pathways for study and work in the UK. Let’s explore these changes and how they might impact your plans.

Changes to Dependent Visas for International Students
Starting January 2024, international students on most courses will no longer be allowed to bring their dependent partners or children to the UK unless they are enrolled in a PhD program or a postgraduate research course. This rule applies only to courses that start on or after 1 January 2024. For students in non-research programs, the option to bring dependents has been removed, reflecting the government’s focus on managing immigration numbers.

Switching from a Student Visa to a Work Visa
International students can still switch to a UK work visa, such as the Skilled Worker visa, once their studies are complete. To qualify for this switch, students must meet these conditions:

  • Complete Your Course: Ensure your job start date falls after your course end date.
  • PhD Requirement: PhD students must complete at least 24 months of study before switching to a Skilled Worker visa.

These rules ensure students follow the proper timeline for transitioning to employment while maintaining compliance with immigration regulations.

Can You Extend a Student Dependent Visa After January 2024?
Yes, dependents can extend their visas as long as the primary Student visa holder (your partner or parent) started their course before 1 January 2024. These new restrictions do not apply to ongoing courses that began before the rule change.

Dependent Visas and the Graduate (PSW) Visa
Dependents already living in the UK under a Student visa can apply to remain under the Graduate visa rules when the primary visa holder switches to a Post-Study Work (PSW) visa. However, this is only permitted if the dependents have been living with the student during their studies. Bringing new dependents under the Graduate visa is not allowed.

Switching from a Dependent Visa to a Work Visa
Dependents on a Student visa have the option to switch to a Skilled Worker visa or another eligible work visa, provided they meet the following requirements:

  1. Job Offer: Secure a job offer from a UK employer licensed to sponsor Skilled Worker visas.
  2. Salary Threshold: Earn at least £38,700 per year, or meet the occupation’s specific "going rate." New graduates may qualify with a lower salary of £30,960 if classified as a new entrant or holding a PhD.
  3. English Proficiency: Pass an English language test at B1 CEFR level or higher.

Note: Parents of children on Student visas cannot switch to a Skilled Worker visa, maintaining distinct eligibility rules for different categories.

What Do These Changes Mean for International Students?
The new visa rules limit opportunities for dependents but still provide pathways for students to remain in the UK for work or additional studies. These updates emphasize the importance of planning ahead and understanding your immigration options.
